Rhinosinusitis, Its Comorbidities and Complications: Evolving Insights into Mechanisms and Clinical Management

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Acute and chronic rhinosinusitis remains one of the most prevalent conditions encountered in otorhinolaryngology and respiratory medicine, affecting patients across all age groups and contributing substantially to the healthcare burden worldwide. While acute forms generally follow a benign course, a significant proportion of patients with chronic disease develop important comorbidities and complications. Growing evidence highlights that rhinosinusitis extends far beyond localized mucosal inflammation, influencing, and being influenced by, a complex interplay of immunological, microbial, anatomical, environmental, and systemic factors.

This Special Issue, “Rhinosinusitis, Its Comorbidities and Complications: Evolving Insights into Mechanisms and Clinical Management,” aims to provide a comprehensive and clinically meaningful exploration of the diverse challenges associated with sinus disease. We welcome contributions addressing the full spectrum of rhinosinusitis-associated conditions, including asthma and other lower-airway diseases, otologic and ocular complications, intracranial extension, osteomyelitis, dental involvement, and systemic manifestations. Studies examining high-risk populations, such as patients with cystic fibrosis, immunodeficiency, or fungal sinus disease, are also highly encouraged.

We invite original research, clinical studies, reviews, and translational investigations that illuminate underlying mechanisms, improve diagnostic accuracy, or advance therapeutic strategies. Submissions focusing on imaging innovations, microbial and immunologic pathways, biomarkers, surgical outcomes, environmental influences, and multidisciplinary management approaches will be of particular interest.

By bringing together diverse perspectives from clinicians, surgeons, researchers, and allied specialists, this Special Issue seeks to deepen our understanding of rhinosinusitis as a complex and multi-system condition. We hope it will support the development of more effective, individualized, and preventive strategies for the improved care of patients with rhinosinusitis and its associated comorbidities and complications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sinusitis is an international peer-reviewed open access semiannually journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs).
