Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The increasing availability of mobile devices has accelerated the development of geographical information systems (GISs). Currently, location-based services (LBSs) are an essential tool for society, with many possible useful applications in our daily lives. These services, along with the vast amount of information provided by remote sensing (RS), provide a heterogeneous source of spatiotemporal information, motivating the development of novel technologies capable of its management. However, the introduction of mobile devices introduced additional limitations related to computational resources, battery consumption, screen sizes, etc. These limitations require the exploration of scalable general-purpose solutions integrated into multiplatform applications.

This Special Issue (SI) focuses on research addressing the latest advances in remote sensing and GIS techniques for their application in mobile computing and location-based services. We call for contributions focusing on topics such as data-processing techniques, scalability strategies, algorithm development, novel frameworks, etc. We also welcome real-world experiments, review papers and high-quality research covering state-of-the-art techniques and development covering computational limitations. We especially encourage the use of freely available remote sensing data and open source processing software used in the Supplementary Materials.

Articles may address, but are not limited, to the following topics:

  • Multimodal data fusion;
  • Real-time processing;
  • Data-processing methods;
  • Machine learning for object detection, automatic image segmentation and change detection;
  • Green and more efficient scalable algorithms;
  • Smart cities;
  • Outdoor and indoor positioning and tracking;
  • Data visualization;
  • Mobile device limitations;
  • Heterogeneous-type and multilevel spatiotemporal resolutions of datasets.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Remote Sensing is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
