Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In the last decade, there has been an increase in the use of bibliometrics as a proxy for the assessment of research quality. This is in part driven by the popularity of league tables and their appetite for simple—some would say simplistic—measures. However, the exponential rise of both on-line open access research publications and social media has produced a new and unexpected set of new alternative non-traditional metrics. These include all forms of traceable interest in scholarly and scientific publications (Webometrics), whether they are views and downloads, number of tweets, media and policy papers references, Facebook pages, blog mentions, etc.
Within this new world of open access, big data, and social media, one wonders about the future of the measurement of research publication quality. Will traditional bibliometrics evolve in more complex indicators, or will they be supplanted by alternative metrics? Will the peer review system become obsolete and be replaced by real-time information on the appeal and relevance of a scientific publication? Perhaps we should just pause, go back to basics, and re-think what we mean by “research evaluation” and what high-quality research looks like.
Within this context, we would like to invite colleagues to submit papers for this special issue to pull together a body of work that will underpin research evaluation in all its many facets. We welcome technically-oriented research on bibliometrics as well as more qualitative work on conceptualising the measurement of research quality.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Publications is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
