Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past few decades, biomaterials have marked a paradigm shift in the biomedical and food fields. They have been widely used for the development of a vast range of regenerative medicine, drug delivery, and functional food applications. In parallel, the development of gels based on biomaterials has rapidly expanded in the form of advanced carriers to deliver a wide range of bioactive agents and scaffolds for tissue engineering, while maintaining their biocompatibility and physicochemical characteristics.

After many years of researchers working on gels in all their forms, they have undoubtedly shown that gels are among the systems with the greatest potential in the biomedical field. Moreover, the incorporation of advanced chemically modified biomaterials in the gel format has allowed for enhanced performance and unmatched properties so far.

Gels, namely hydrogels and aerogels, have been proven to be excellent platforms for the preparation of targeted drug delivery systems, cell encapsulation, biosensors, tissue engineering scaffolds, and other regenerative medicine approaches, disease models, and 3D cell cultures, among others.

This Special Issue intends to gather review papers on gel structure–processing–application interrelationships for specific case studies of biomaterials, processing methods, and applications for biomedicine and functional food.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
