Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

A biomaterial is any substance that has been engineered to interact with biological systems for a medical purpose - either a therapeutic or a diagnostic one. In the medical application, biomaterials are often used perform, augment, or replace the natural function of living structures or biomedical devices. Biomaterials are also used widely in dental applications, surgery, and drug delivery, due to their versatile traits, including biocompatibility, biodegradability and low immunogenicity. Besides, natural biopolymers could minimize the toxicity and side effects when used in biomedicine and cosmetics/food industries.

In addition, biopolymeric nanomaterials refer to the biocompatible nanomaterials consisting of biopolymers such as protein (silk, collagen, gelatin, β-casein, zein and albumin), protein-mimicked polypeptides and polysaccharides (chitosan, alginate, pullulan, starch and heparin).

Biopolymeric nanomaterials can be widely used in various application, such as: i) Delivery systems for bioactive compounds in food application, (ii) Delivery of therapeutic molecules (drugs and genes), (iii) Tissue engineering, (iv) Anti-microbial and anti-viral agents, (v) Packaging materials, (vi) Food products (design/quality/safety), (vii) Nanocosmetics, (viii) Water purification…

This special issue emphasizes the fundamental design concepts and emerging applications of biopolymers based materials. Further, the challenges and barriers in the synthesis and production of biopolymers for potential applications, have to be circumvented.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
