Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Wetlands are among Earth’s most productive ecosystems and act as crucial filters for global water resources. At the heart of these systems are macrophytes, which do much more than provide structure; they act as biological engines for environmental cleanup. While treatment wetlands have been studied for decades, we are now entering an era where we can decode the specific interactions between plants, microbes, and contaminants at molecular and functional levels. We invite contributors to submit research that not only focuses on removal efficiency but also delves into the how and why of plant-mediated remediation.

This Special Issue of Plants aims to explore the physiological, biochemical, and ecological pathways through which plants facilitate the removal of contaminants from soil and water.

We are seeking high-quality original research and review articles including, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Plant adaptation and tolerance mechanisms to high-strength wastewater, heavy metals, and organic micro-pollutants.
  • The impact of root exudates (organic acids, enzymes) on the recruitment of degradative microbial endophytes.
  • The role of aerenchyma and Radial Oxygen Loss (ROL) in creating aerobic microsites for nitrification and hydrocarbon oxidation.
  • Translocation of contaminants from roots to shoots.
  • Comparative studies on native vs. invasive or ornamental species in treatment wetlands.
  • The role of plants in new applications such as green walls or rooftops for the treatment of different types of wastewaters.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
