Dear Colleagues,
Cereals are one of the most important crops worldwide, playing a crucial role in global food security. However, increasing demand for food, climate change, emerging diseases, and limited natural resources continue to challenge cereal production. To address these issues, advances in cereal breeding and genetics are essential for developing high-yielding, resilient, and quality-adapted cultivars.
Recent progress in genomics, molecular breeding, high-throughput phenotyping, and bioinformatics has significantly improved our understanding of the genetic basis of complex agronomic traits. These tools have accelerated the identification of valuable genetic variation and enhanced breeding efficiency, enabling the development of improved wheat varieties adapted to diverse and changing environments.
The novelty of this Special Issue lies in its integrative approach, combining advanced genomic tools, high-throughput phenotyping, and data-driven methodologies with practical breeding applications. It uniquely emphasizes the translation of genetic insights into climate-resilient, resource-efficient cereal cultivars, while highlighting emerging trends such as genomic prediction and artificial intelligence. By bridging fundamental research and applied breeding, this collection addresses current challenges in sustainable cereal production under changing environmental conditions.
This Special Issue, “Cereal Breeding and Genetics”, brings together research focused on genetic diversity, trait dissection, molecular and genomic approaches, breeding methodologies, and the development of cereal cultivars with improved productivity, quality, and stress tolerance. By highlighting recent advances and emerging trends, this collection aims to support both fundamental research and practical breeding efforts.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
