Nutritional Approaches for Chronic Disease Prevention and Care: From Individuals to Populations
This special issue belongs to the section “Nutrition and Public Health“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Diet plays a pivotal role in both the prevention and management of chronic diseases, which remain the leading cause of global morbidity and mortality. The nutritional approaches for chronic disease have evolved from studying single nutrients to understanding complex dietary patterns and their interaction with genetics, the gut microbiome, and social determinants of health. Furthermore, there is a growing emphasis on moving from observational evidence to the implementation and evaluation of dietary interventions across diverse populations. Understanding the real-world impact of these interventions on hard clinical endpoints, quality of life, and health equity is a central challenge and opportunity in modern public health.
This Special Issue aims to investigate the effects of dietary interventions or complementary treatments on health outcomes and in individuals with chronic diseases.
Potential areas for manuscript submission include, but are not limited to:
Epidemiological Studies: Large-scale cohort or case–control studies investigating the association between dietary patterns (e.g., Mediterranean, plant-based, DASH) and the incidence or progression of specific chronic diseases.
Dietary Interventions: Results from randomized controlled trials or pragmatic interventional studies evaluating the efficacy of specific dietary strategies (e.g., intermittent fasting, low-carbohydrate diets, personalized nutrition) on clinical health outcomes.
Mechanistic Insights: Research exploring biological mechanisms (e.g., inflammation, oxidative stress, gut microbiota shifts, epigenetics) that mediate the relationship between diet and chronic diseases.
Special Populations and Health Equity: Studies focusing on dietary needs, interventions, and outcomes in understudied populations with chronic diseases, addressing disparities in nutrition and health.
Methodological Innovations: Research employing novel methods in dietary assessment, data analysis (e.g., machine learning), or the integration of omics technologies to advance nutritional epidemiology."

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
