Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid emergence of antimicrobial resistance and the continuous threat of emerging and re-emerging viral infections highlight the urgent need for innovative anti-infective agents. Bioactive peptides and proteins, including antimicrobial and antiviral peptides, lectins, recombinant proteins, and other naturally derived or engineered biomolecules, have attracted increasing attention as promising alternatives or complements to conventional antimicrobial and antiviral therapies. This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advances in the discovery, characterization, production, engineering, and biomedical applications of bioactive peptides and proteins with antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Particular attention will be given to innovative approaches for recombinant production, including microbial and plant-based expression systems, protein engineering, structure–activity relationships, mechanisms of action, and strategies for improving stability, activity, specificity, and therapeutic potential. Contributions addressing antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and broad-spectrum anti-infective activities are welcome, as are studies on the development of peptide- and protein-based microbicides and other preventive or therapeutic approaches.
