Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Microorganisms continue to play a fundamental role in addressing some of today's most pressing scientific and technological challenges. From sustainable agriculture and environmental remediation to industrial bioprocesses, renewable energy, food production, and human health, microbial systems offer innovative solutions with significant societal and economic impact. Recent advances in molecular biology, genomics, systems biology, synthetic biology, and bioinformatics have greatly expanded our ability to understand, engineer, and exploit microorganisms for diverse biotechnological applications.
This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for the dissemination of high-quality research that advances our understanding of microbial biotechnology and its practical applications. We welcome contributions that explore microbial diversity, physiology, metabolism, and interactions, as well as studies focused on the development and optimization of microbial processes for industrial, agricultural, environmental, and biomedical purposes. Research addressing emerging technologies, interdisciplinary approaches, and innovative strategies for the sustainable use of microorganisms is particularly encouraged.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to, microbial consortia, industrial microbiology, metabolic and genetic engineering, microbial enzymes, bioleaching and biomining, waste valorization, bioremediation, microbial ecology, fermentation technology, food and agricultural microbiology, systems microbiology, and other advances that contribute to the growing field of microbial biotechnology.
The Special Issue also welcomes studies integrating computational approaches, machine learning, bioinformatics, and systems biology to advance microbial biotechnology and accelerate the discovery, design, and optimization of microbial processes.
Original research articles, reviews, communications, and perspectives are welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
