Microphysiological Systems for Cancer Research

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Microphysiological systems (MPS) are experimental platforms that mimic the physiological functions of human and animal organs and tissues in health and disease. MPS are incredibly versatile tools, given the small sample sizes required to operate them, the improved manipulation and sample control and overall, as á la carte models. FDA and NIH support in the US has helped drive the field and thus, MPS have come to the spotlight in recent years.

Many different MPS now exist, ranging from simple to highly sophisticated MPS and applications in different diseases continue to increase, with cancer being one of the most common applications. These models are now helping move the field of cancer research forward by allowing researchers to interrogate specific mechanisms, understand cell–cell and cell–environment interactions in the tumor niche, and recapitulate elusive microenvironments, such as metastatic sites, to better understand these processes and find new therapeutic targets.

In this Special Issue, we invite contributions (original research papers, review articles, and brief communications) that focus on the latest applications and advances in MPS in cancer research broadly, including new device development, novel applications of MPS both technologically and biologically oriented. We hope to provide an interesting update on current work in MPS in cancer that is of interest to both the engineering and biomedical community.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Micromachines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2100 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
