Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Refractory alloys and ceramics have demonstrated irreplaceable value in aerospace, nuclear energy, defense, and high-end equipment manufacturing due to their exceptional performance under extreme service environments, including high temperatures, irradiation, corrosion, and wear. The continuous emergence of novel material systems—such as high-entropy alloys, high-entropy ceramics, and multi-component solid solutions—coupled with the rapid development of advanced fabrication techniques like spark plasma sintering, reactive hot pressing, and additive manufacturing has opened new opportunities for materials design and performance tailoring in this field.

This Special Issue aims to bring together the latest research advances in refractory alloys and ceramics, providing a platform for scholars worldwide to showcase cutting-edge progress and exchange scientific ideas. The scope covers the entire research chain, from compositional design, powder synthesis, and densification sintering to microstructural characterization and service performance evaluation. Particular emphasis is placed on novel material systems (e.g., high-/medium-entropy refractory alloys, high-entropy carbide/boride ceramics, and multiphase composite ceramics), microstructure engineering strategies, and damage mechanisms under extreme environments.

Furthermore, innovative processing routes enabling efficient, controllable, and cost-effective fabrication—such as low-temperature densification, rapid sintering, and in-situ reaction sintering—are also of particular interest to this Special Issue. Original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and short communications are all welcome. Researchers from around the world are cordially invited to contribute their work to this collection.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Metals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
