Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to launch this Special Issue entitled “Sarcopenia and Mortality Risk in Older Adults”. Sarcopenia—defined as the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function—is increasingly recognized as a major determinant of poor outcomes in older adults, including falls, disability, hospitalization, and mortality.
Despite advances in diagnostic criteria and screening tools, the association between sarcopenia and mortality remains complex and is influenced by multiple factors, such as comorbidities, inflammation, nutritional status, and socioeconomic context. A deeper understanding of these relationships is essential in improving prevention strategies and clinical outcomes.
This Special Issue will gather contributions that examine the mechanisms, clinical relevance, and prognostic implications of sarcopenia in relation to mortality risk. We welcome original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and clinical or methodological studies.
We particularly encourage studies that use longitudinal data, explore innovative interventions, or address underrepresented populations. Submissions that incorporate interdisciplinary perspectives or real-world clinical applications are especially welcome.
In light of recent developments, we also invite submissions exploring the impacts of GLP-1 receptor agonists and GIP-based medications on muscle mass and function. These therapies, while already widely used in diabetes and obesity management, are now being investigated for their potential role in contributing to, or modifying, sarcopenia risk, which represents an emerging and important area of research.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
