Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The ever-increasing demand for network traffic is primarily driven by bandwidth-intensive applications, such as cloud storage, cloud computing, video streaming, and video conferencing. Furthermore, digital inclusion continues to expand the number of users accessing information via networks, fueled by the widespread adoption of 5G/6G access networks and the proliferation of computational devices, including remote sensors, drones, and autonomous vehicles, which characterize the evolving Internet of Things (IoT). Optical fiber networks, whether at local, regional, or global scales, serve as the backbone infrastructure capable of accommodating this growing traffic volume.
Addressing these challenges requires efficient network planning and optimization strategies to ensure the proper dimensioning and management of optical networks. This Special Issue aims to explore mathematical and artificial intelligence-based techniques designed to tackle these challenges, covering a broad spectrum of topics related to optical network design and optimization. Potential topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- ILP and MILP models for network planning and operational optimization.
- Bio-inspired optimization techniques for optical network design and operation.
- Machine learning approaches for enhancing network performance and resource allocation.
- Design and optimization of access optical networks, wireless optical networks, and backbone networks.
- Mathematical and AI-driven techniques for network performance evaluation and modeling to support planning and optimization.
- Methods for optimizing the placement and dimensioning of network devices.
- Techniques for managing and optimizing the operation of optical networks.
- Advanced algorithms for routing and spectrum allocation.
- Optimization strategies for the development of environmentally sustainable optical networks.
This Special Issue welcomes original research contributions that advance theoretical and practical methodologies for improving the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of optical networks. We encourage researchers to submit their latest findings and innovative solutions addressing these critical challenges in optical networking.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Mathematics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
