Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In the ever-evolving industrial landscape, AI-driven technologies will enable the high-value product design and manufacturing industry to reach a level of innovation and productivity that is currently beyond human ability. To accelerate the adoption and efficient implementation of these technologies, the shift to the emerging paradigm of Industry 5.0 must be thoroughly considered. From design concept to end-product, engineers will need to face huge challenges in balancing the integration of AI tools with the much-needed human innovation and creativity.
Geometrical product specification and quality inspection tasks are placed right at the heart of the design and advanced manufacturing process. Therefore, it is increasingly important to develop AI-enabled methods and technologies that will shift the conventional product specification and verification approaches to the manufacturing landscape of the future.
This Special Issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research, innovations, and case studies in the field of geometrical product specification and quality inspection for advanced manufacturing. The focus is on how AI-driven tools, methods, and technologies can bring the currently applied geometrical specification and verification approaches (e.g., GD&T tolerancing techniques, non-destructive evaluation, and laser scanning) to the era of Industry 5.0.
We are pleased to invite researchers and experts from academia and industry to contribute their original research articles and reviews to this Special Issue. The submission of case studies that illustrate innovation in manufacturing practices and original solutions to industrial problems is also of particular interest for this Special Issue. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- AI tools for geometrical product specification during early engineering design;
- Geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) in i5.0;
- Standardization issues in geometrical specification and verification;
- AI-enabled industrial coordinate metrology;
- Quality control for personalized manufacturing;
- Adaptive and collaborative coordinate measuring systems (CMSs);
- Uncertainty assessment for quality inspection;
- AI-enhanced digital metrological twins;
- 3D-CAD data exchange and interoperability in the entire product lifecycle.
I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Machines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
