Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The landscape of athlete health management is undergoing a profound transformation, shifting from a traditional reactive model of injury treatment to a proactive, data-driven paradigm. At the core of this evolution is the convergence of advanced monitoring technologies, from wearable sensors and IoT devices to sophisticated biochemical analysis. This integration allows for a holistic understanding of the athlete, correlating external training loads, captured through GPS and accelerometry, with the internal physiological response, measured via heart rate variability and novel biomarkers. However, the proliferation of data presents its own challenge: how to translate these complex, high-volume data streams into actionable insights that genuinely protect athletes and enhance performance. This Special Issue, "Emerging Trends in Athleth Health: Advanced Monitoring for Injury Prevention and Recovery," seeks to address this challenge directly. We invite high-quality contributions that explore, validate, and apply novel monitoring tools and analytical methodologies. We are particularly interested in studies that demonstrate the power of data integration, using machine learning and predictive models to forecast injury risk from multimodal inputs. The scope extends beyond physical metrics to encompass the crucial psychological dimension of athlete readiness. Furthermore, we welcome research that showcases how advanced systems—from high-resolution ultrasound tracking tissue healing to markerless motion capture assessing movement quality—can guide evidence-based and highly personalized return-to-play decisions. Submissions focusing on the unique challenges of monitoring specific athletic populations (e.g., youth, female, para-athletes) are also highly encouraged. Our goal is to assemble a definitive collection of research that will serve as a vital resource for sports scientists, clinicians, and coaches, ultimately shaping the future of athlete care.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Wearable sensors for clinical real-time load management and fatigue detection.
- Biomarkers (salivary, blood, urine) for monitoring internal load, inflammation, and recovery status.
- Advanced imaging techniques (e.g., high-resolution ultrasound, functional MRI) for tracking tissue healing and guiding rehabilitation.
- Data integration and machine learning models for multi-modal injury risk prediction.
- Objective monitoring of movement quality and clinical biomechanics using markerless motion capture and inertial sensors.
- Monitoring psychological readiness and well-being through validated digital platforms and passive sensing.
- Data-driven approaches to personalizing return-to-play protocols.
- Application of advanced monitoring systems in specific athletic populations (e.g., youth, female, para-athletes).

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
