Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the launch of the new Special Issue “Updates on the Clinical Applications of Dental Restorative Materials”. Our goal is to to publishing cutting-edge scientific research that mirrors the current state of the art in the field of restorative dentistry.

It is quite clear that clinical results achieved in restorative dentistry are due to personal clinical skills, but are also intricately linked to the continuous development of innovative materials. Therefore, clinical progress is invariably intertwined with the innovation and enhancement of materials, instruments, and equipment. The integration of modern dental materials has undeniably propelled restorative dentistry towards unprecedented achievements.

In recent years, the development and the introduction of new dental materials across restorative and prosthetic dentistry has been supported by effective in vitro pre-clinical research, but it has not always been paralleled by robust clinical research, resulting in clinicians encountering materials that may not necessarily outperform their predecessors. Consequently, there is a pressing need for clinical studies to establish substantial evidence for the efficacy of recently introduced dental materials in the field of restorative dentistry.

I am pleased to announce a call for submissions to this Special Issue, and I am inviting researchers to submit high-quality clinical research articles and reviews that delve into the latest advances and updates of restorative dentistry and dental restorative materials. Your contributions will play a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of these materials and their impact on the practice of restorative dentistry.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.

Background: Tooth bleaching can compromise the color match between dental tissues and restorations. Single-shade resin-based composites (RBCs) have been developed to simplify shade matching; however, their performance after dental bleaching remains uncertain. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the ability of single-shade RBCs to adapt to the color of the dental substrate after dental bleaching. Methods: A systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO. Searches were performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus (December 2024). In vitro studies were selected based on the PICOS criteria (P: human or bovine teeth; I: teeth restored with single-shade RBCs and bleached; C: bleached dental tissue; O: color match; S: in vitro studies). Two reviewers (kappa = 0.90) applied eligibility criteria, extracted the data, and assessed the risk of bias using the RoBDEMAT tool. Results: Eight studies involving 362 restorations were included. Most studies indicated that single-shade RBCs achieved an acceptable color match after tooth bleaching. Study quality was generally moderate to low, with most evaluations rated as “sufficiently reported or adequate”. Conclusions: Single-shade RBCs demonstrated the ability to match bleached dental tissue in vitro, although effectiveness may vary depending on bleaching duration and storage conditions. Full article
