Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, the field of sports cardiology has flourished with the increasing recognition of specific nuanced cardiovascular care that athletes require. Recent high-profile cases of famous athletes who have experienced sudden cardiac arrest with a subsequent safe return to competitive sports has brought sports cardiology to the forefront. Over the past decade, there has more focus on the safety of vigorous exercise for athletes with a variety of genetic cardiomyopathies, improvements in cardiac imaging to help further differentiate athletic remolding vs. pathophysiology, and an increase in specific exercise prescription therapy using cardiopulmonary exercise tests. Across the world, sports cardiologists are establishing dedicated sports cardiology programs to take care of athletes of all ages and skill levels.

While great advancements have been made, many unanswered questions remain and further work is required. Controversies exist regarding the utility of ECG screening and the management of endurance athletes with coronary artery calcifications. Further research is needed to investigate disparities in sudden cardiac death and how artificial intelligence fits into sports cardiology.

In this Special Issue (SI) of the Journal of Clinical Medicine, “Sports Cardiology: Current Clinical Status and Outlook into the Future”, we aim to focus on important clinical and research advances in the field of sports cardiology. Our goal is to publish novel research articles of significant clinical and scientific value and review articles on key topics in sports cardiology written by experts in their field.

We look forward to receiving your contributions to this Special Issue.
