Cardiac Disorders Linked to Chronic Kidney Disease

Dear Colleagues,

The heart and the kidneys interact with each other to preserve organ perfusion and hemodynamic stability through a complex organization. As these two organs are interdependent, acute or chronic dysfunction in one organ induces acute or chronic dysfunction in the other. Patients afflicted with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a high load of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and this is part of the cardiorenal syndrome. Cardiac biomarkers are often deregulated in CKD even when symptoms are not apparent, and careful interpretation of cardiac biomarkers can provide important diagnostic and prognostic information. There is a need for innovative biomarkers to monitor heart and kidney condition in CKD, including in the epigenetics field. It is also important to develop gene network and multi-omics technologies in this field to better detect these biomarkers. These molecules would be helpful to develop targets for new therapeutic approaches and new prospects in early intervention for CKD patients. In this special issue, we will deal with the biological, pathological, and clinical relationship between CVD and CKD and their therapeutic administration, with an emphasis on the gene regulation networks that are deregulated in the cardiorenal syndrome.
