Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
As with any scientific area of great significance, information studies faces a variety of fundamental challenges, such as reaching a consensus regarding the definition of information, developing efficient and flexible information measures, uncovering the true relations between information, data, and knowledge, and establishing an adequate typology of information. Recent applications of the General Theory of Information (GTI) have enabled the optimization of our current information technologies to make them highly efficient, resilient, and intelligent, akin to how single-celled organisms evolved into complex human societies.
Mark Burgin's GTI provides a comprehensive framework for understanding information in biological systems, bridging the material world of matter and energy and the mental world of biological systems. Information, in this context, is not just data but a fundamental component that guides the organization and functioning of living systems.
In addition to the GTI, recent progress in Artificial Intelligence (AI), neuro-symbolic computing, and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) has significantly advanced our understanding and capabilities regarding information technologies. AI has evolved beyond automation to augmentation, enhancing creativity, decision-making, and problem-solving.
Neuro-symbolic computing integrates neural network-based learning with symbolic knowledge representation and logical reasoning, offering robust learning and explainability. The aim of AGI is to develop highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at the most economically valuable work, promising profound changes in various sectors.
As we continue to explore and innovate, the synergy between cells, code, and circuits will pave the way for a future where machines and humans coexist and collaborate in unprecedented ways. This collaboration holds the promise of addressing complex global challenges, enhancing human capabilities, and transforming our understanding of life itself. The journey from cells to code and circuits is not just a scientific endeavor but a profound exploration of what it means to be alive, pushing the boundaries of knowledge and technology to create a harmonious and intelligent future.
The goal of this Special Issue is to present recent research aimed at solving the fundamental problems of information studies. We are soliciting papers that advance our knowledge and current understanding of information technologies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Advances in AI and its applications;
- Neuro-symbolic computing and its integration with information systems;
- Progress towards AGI and its implications for information technologies;
- The theoretical and practical aspects of the GTI;
- Efficient and flexible information measures;
- Relations between information, data, and knowledge;
- A typology of information.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Information is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
