Dear Colleagues,
Bisphenols are organic compounds from the phenol group that are widely used in the plastics industry to produce polymers and epoxy resins. Bisphenol A (BPA), the main representative of the bisphenol group, has been utilized in this industry for many decades. However, numerous scientific studies have revealed that they have a multifaceted negative effect on human and animal organisms and can penetrate them through the digestive system, lungs, and skin; this has led to the introduction of numerous restrictions on the production and use of BPA. These restrictions consist of eliminating BPA from the production of many everyday items by introducing products that are "free from bisphenol A" (BPA-free) and replacing this compound with other substances with similar properties. Until recently, many BPA analogs were considered completely safe for organisms. However, recent studies have shown that bisphenols such as BPA also stimulate estrogen receptors and may have a negative impact on a number of physiological processes.
Despite significant developments in knowledge about the harmful effects of bisphenols, many aspects related to their impact on organisms remain not fully explained. Therefore, topics of interest for this Special Issue extend to BPA and its analogs that affect both humans and animals.
