Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) face several factors that contribute to increased inflammation, including oxidative stress, metabolic acidosis, proteinuria, infections, changes in adipose tissue metabolism, and gut dysbiosis. The inflammatory condition in CKD is marked by the abnormal activation of the innate immune system, which ultimately leads to the signaling of various inflammatory pathways, such as nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), and nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, pyrin domain-containing-3 (NLRP3). The primary consequence of this inflammatory state includes disease progression, renal fibrosis, the onset of cardiovascular diseases, and increased mortality in this population. In this context, several non-pharmacological strategies are essential for modulating this condition in CKD. Among these strategies, the notion of food as medicine has gained prominence, as the nutrients and bioactive compounds in food can influence inflammatory pathways in CKD. Therefore, this Special Issue aims to explore areas related to the use of nutrients, bioactive compounds from food, or dietary patterns that modulate the inflammatory condition in CKD. Submissions of narrative review manuscripts, systematic reviews, and original manuscripts will be accepted.
This Special Issue is supervised by Prof. Dr. Denise Mafra, assisted by our Guest Editor's Assistant Editor Prof. Dr. Karen Salve Coutinho-Wolino (Graduate Program in Biological Sciences-Physiology, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro ).

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Molecular Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. There is an Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal. For details about the APC please see here. Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
