Dear Colleagues,
Genetic and molecular mechanisms in animal reproduction involve processes like the formation of gametes, fertilization, gene regulation during development, and genetic imprinting, all of which ensure the continuation of species and create genetic diversity. Key molecular players include gene regulatory proteins that control cell differentiation and signaling pathways that regulate development, such as the Wnt, TGF-β, and MAPK pathways. These mechanisms are crucial for understanding reproduction and are used in modern breeding and conservation efforts.
Genetic and molecular processes
Gamete formation and fertilization: Meiosis creates haploid gametes, and their fusion during fertilization restores the diploid state in the offspring.
Gene regulation: Regulatory proteins and signaling pathways control gene expression patterns, which are essential for cell differentiation, sex determination, and overall embryonic development.
Genetic variation: Sexual reproduction, through the combination of genes from two parents and processes like crossing over, generates genetic diversity in offspring.
Genetic imprinting: In some cases, the expression of a gene depends on whether it was inherited from the mother or father.
Epigenetic changes: Environmental factors can cause epigenetic modifications that alter gene expression without changing the underlying DNA sequence, which can impact reproductive success.
This Special Issue, "Genetic and Molecular Mechanisms in Animal Reproduction", aims to compile a collection of cutting-edge research and insightful reviews that illuminate the complex regulatory networks controlling reproductive processes.
