Hybrid Energy Storage System and Its Flexibility Services for Integrating Variable Generation

Dear Colleagues,

Hybrid energy storage system (HESS) has been featured as a technological advancement that harnesses the functional advantages of two or more different types of existing energy storage devices and provides excellent power and energy capabilities, enabling the desired performance of the energy storage system. As the penetration level of variable generation grows, it is envisioned that HESS would find use in more practical and valuable flexibility services.

This Special Issue of Energies aims to compile recent research and development efforts towards maximizing the technical and economic benefits of HESS for grid operations. The scope includes the design and implementation of system topology (or interfaces), optimal and coordinated control and operational strategies for various grid applications, and storage internal states such as SOC and SOH. We seek innovative technologies and practical experiences from both academia and industry regarding both small-scale (microgrid) and large-scale (utility scale) applications of HESS. In addition to these topics, we welcome papers dealing with related issues that fit the scope and objectives of this Special Issue.

The topics of interest in this Special Issue on hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) include (but are not restricted to):

• Design aspects of HESS: Technical and economic benefits of HESS configuration and its (multi-)functionalities;
• Coordinated control and operation strategies for HESS in providing the various flexibility services for integrating the variable renewable generation and improving the grid dynamics;
• HESS management for reliable operation and strategies for expanding the lifespan of HESS;
• Practical applications and industry experiences through HESS
