Special Issue "Intelligence-Based Smart Sensor for Cloud/Edge Systems"

Dear Colleagues,

Intelligent systems influence many aspects of daily life. With the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML), opportunities have been created for smart computing infrastructure. However, problems might arise from the lack of interconnectivity, higher reliability, real-time predictive analytics, and low-latency requirements. Thus, next-generation systems must have greater integration, speed, flexibility, and energy efficiency. Some contend that this feature set will require enhanced sensing technologies, new types of processors and computing architectures that break with traditional concepts and blur the lines between conventional computing system elements. The sensing infrastructure and devices having intelligent aspects might be considered as an extension of conventional sensors with advanced learning and adaptability. Intelligent sensors and sensing networks can perform several tasks such as data collection and processing, data interpretation, the fusion of data from multiple sources, validation of local and remotely collected data, error compensation, etc. Additionally, they provide support for post-sensing information processing, communication, and integration. We see extensive research on intelligence-based smart sensing for cloud/edge systems, which has manifested itself in the development of exciting new systems including those that improve efficiency, provide reliability, reduce cost, optimize sustainability, or bring new business venues to bear.  Additionally, although more mature Artificial Intelligence (AI) work targeting smart sensors for cloud/edge systems is out there, there is a need for incredibly more. Hence, this proposed Special Issue aims to bring together academic researchers, industry practitioners, and individuals working in related areas to bring their state-of-the-art research ideas, concepts, views, latest findings, and results and share them with the community at large. Both theoretical and empirical studies are encouraged.
