Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years there has been a push towards neuro-affirming practices for autistic people. This is in response to overwhelming deficit narrative that persists in autism research. Alongside this, neurodivergent diagnoses (including autism) are increasing, with students requiring different levels of support across a range of educational settings in order to facilitate successful educational participation.

There is a need to explore neuro-affirming practices within educational settings, programmes and pedagogies and the extent to which they support autistic students’ learning, participation, success, wellbeing and agency.

This Special Issue aims to collate and disseminate the most recent thinking and advances in neuro-affirming approaches specific to educational settings from early years schooling, primary school, secondary school and tertiary/ post-secondary education.

We will consider submissions addressing a range of issues including instructional approaches, innovative or technology based approaches, environmental and sensory supports, therapeutic approaches in schools, collaborative approaches and strengths-based models.

We will consider a range of methodologies including qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods or systematic/ scoping review methods.

We welcome submissions from education, allied health, psychology and disability studies.
