Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Focus of the Special Issue
This Special Issue invites scholarly and practice-informed contributions that document, analyze, and theorize Values-based Education (VbE) across diverse cultural, institutional, and disciplinary contexts. We define Values-based Education broadly as teaching and learning organized around the deliberate cultivation of core human values in ways that are responsive to the learner’s developmental, emotional, and relational dimensions.
The issue is conceptually anchored by an emic–etic framework. We seek both culturally embedded, context-specific accounts of how values education is enacted and understood within particular communities (emic accounts) and cross-cultural and comparative analyses that surface shared themes, transferable principles, and universal human elements across contexts (etic analyses).
Types of Contributions Invited
The Special Issue welcomes contributions across a range of scholarly genres, including:
- Empirical studies
- Conceptual or theoretical papers
- Comparative and cross-cultural analyses
- Practice-informed scholarship
- Systematic or integrative literature reviews
- Policy analyses
Contributions may with how values education attends to identity formation, self-understanding, and developmental readiness across the lifespan; the role of emotional awareness, empathy, and interpersonal connection as both objects and vehicles of values-based learning; how particular communities, traditions, and epistemic frameworks give shape to the values emphasized and the methods employed; and/or the role of interdependence, collective belonging, and communal responsibility in defining and transmitting values.
Specifically, contributing papers might showcase one or more of the following:
- teacher education and training programs
- continuing education/professional development of teachers
- assessment of teaching and learning
- models (e.g., theories, frameworks, paradigms)
- methods (e.g., curricula, syllabi, programs, measurement)
- policies or initiatives
- the promise and peril of AI for teaching and learning values
- obstacles and opportunities in VbE
We particularly encourage contributions that bridge scholarly and practitioner perspectives, and that center voices and contexts that have been underrepresented in educational research.
