Dear Colleagues,
The surface electrocardiogram (ECG) continues to have a significant role in clinical diagnostics, and despite over a century having passed since its emergence, it remains the most widely used diagnostic method in clinical cardiology. In patients with arrhythmias, the ECG is vital not only for obtaining a correct diagnosis but also for the prognostic assessment of the arrhythmia. A correct diagnosis, however, can only be made following a rational and enlightened interpretative process, remembering that cardiac rhythm is governed by a strict logic derived from the anatomy and physiology of the heart and by very specific laws governing the formation and conduction of the cardiac impulse. Therefore, no diagnosis can be accepted if it conflicts with certain basic rules.
The importance of the ECG, on the other hand, appears relatively modest in structural heart disease, where recent and sophisticated imaging techniques demonstrate a decidedly superior diagnostic power. However, even in this area, the ECG is still an important diagnostic tool and is able to provide data with independent prognostic value, helping to direct the correct therapeutic approach. Far from being obsolete, electrocardiography remains a vital and relevant technique, despite its near-zero technological evolution. For instance, the same electrocardiogram that in the 1980s was reported as an "innocent" right bundle branch block can today indicate the presence of a potentially lethal "Brugada pattern".
The main problem is that electrocardiography is difficult, and its apparent simplicity is a lure, or worse, a deception! Therefore, in-depth, enthusiastic, and constant study is essential.
It is therefore currently essential to constantly work to maintain and enhance the culture of clinical electrocardiography as part of the comprehensive assessment of each individual patient. With this in mind, the upcoming publication of a Special Issue entitled "Advanced Electrocardiogram for Clinical Applications" is planned. In this Special Issue, electrocardiography experts will highlight the most recent and fundamental advances in cardiac electrophysiology and electrocardiographic diagnosis through research articles or reviews, contributing to the growth and further dissemination of the electrocardiography culture.
I am pleased to invite you to submit manuscripts highlighting recent advances in electrocardiography and underlining its importance in clinical diagnostics.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome, as well as case reports. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the role of the ECG in (a) cardiac electrophysiology; (b) the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias; (c) cardiomyopathies; (d) myocardial ischemia; (e) extracardiac pathologies; and (f) electrolyte and metabolic disorders.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
