Quasicrystals: pattern formation and aperiodic order

The central aim of this workshop is to bring together four different research communities to understanding quasicrystals (QCs) and aperiodic order: (i) QCs in materials science, (ii) QCs in soft matter, (iii) QCs in partial differential equations (PDEs) and (iv) QCs in aperiodic tilings. An improved level of engagement and understanding between researchers in these areas will bring great benefits to our understanding of QCs.

The workshop will capitalise on recent progress by giving leading and upcoming researchers a forum to discuss how different approaches can be most effectively combined to tackle and solve the big open problems in the field. Hosting this workshop will allow the UK community to take a lead role in the efforts to achieve this goal.

Further objectives of the workshop are to:

  • Share current state of knowledge from the communities working in different but related fields
  • Share open problems and discuss what approaches might be transferable to attack these
  • Initiate joint projects between participants
  • Convene a subgroup of participants to prepare a joint survey article (or a collection of articles) presenting the state of the art
  • Discuss and plan potential public engagement activities
  • Discuss and plan further workshops and meetings to build on outcome of the workshop
  • Discuss funding opportunities for joint research projects.
