Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Coatings on light metals, such as aluminium and magnesium and other elements, has been of significant technological importance. Coatings on these metals can be for the purpose of aesthetics or for the prevention of corrosion, with applications ranging from the automotive or aerospace industries, and even in structural applications, such as in the case of buildings. These coatings, that are often only a few nanometers to few micron in thickness are of significant industrial importance; there has been a significant drive to understand their mechanisms for maintaining protection, appearance, integrity, and reliability while being exposed to harsh environments, and the study of this has gained substantial importance among researchers, experimental and theoreticians alike.

The present Special Issue discusses the latest advancements in the field of highly performant, aesthetic, corrosion barriers made of either electroactive elements, such as metallic, carbon nanotubes or other conducting materials, or the physical barriers, such as ceramics, polymers, or composite coatings. Additionally, for the functional coatings for the aesthetic applications such as anodizing, electrophoretic or friction surfacing, etc.  Photocatalytic and conversion coatings for self-cleaning applications are considered as well.

The scope of the current Special Issue will serve as a compendium of papers that discusses :

  1. Theoretical and experimental aspects of coatings on light metals such as aluminum, magnesium, and similar materials.
  2. Corrosion protection, conversion coatings on the light alloys and composites.
  3. Aesthetics, functional coatings, such as self-cleaning surfaces.
  4. Recent developments in the multifunctional coatings technology, organic or inorganic.
  5. Tribological studies on these coatings, in order to study the wear and friction under static or dynamic loaded conditions.
  6. Coatings produced by various methods, CVD, PVD, Electroless coatings, anodization, plasma coating, electrophoretic coatings or simple conversion coatings and theirs variants.
  7. Mathematical modeling, simulations of the coatings related to their functions and degradation mechanisms.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
