Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to contribute your research to the Special Issue entitled “Cellulose-Based Composite Coating Materials: Design, Characterization and Applications.” This Special Issue will highlight and disseminate recent advances in the development, functionalization, processing, characterization, and application of cellulose-based composite coatings.

As one of the most abundant and renewable biopolymers, cellulose has emerged as a promising sustainable alternative to conventional petroleum-based coating materials. Recent progress in chemical modification, nanostructuring, and composite engineering has significantly enhanced its performance, enabling its use in diverse fields such as packaging, protective and functional coatings, energy systems, and biomedical technologies.

We welcome original research articles and concise review papers that provide both fundamental understanding and practical insights into cellulose-based composite coatings. Particular emphasis will be placed on elucidating structure–property relationships, interfacial interactions, and strategies for performance optimization, as well as on advanced characterization techniques for evaluating mechanical, thermal, barrier, and surface properties.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design and synthesis of cellulose-based composite coatings;
  • Functionalization and surface modification strategies;
  • Structure–property relationships and interfacial phenomena;
  • Advanced characterization techniques and performance evaluation;
  • Sustainable and scalable processing methods for high-performance coatings.

Applications may include automotive interior panels, packaging (including food-grade materials), and furniture, as well as energy technologies such as supercapacitors, battery separators, and photothermal systems. They could also cover sensing platforms, functional and protective coatings (including high-temperature applications), membrane-based separation processes, sustainable materials such as bioplastics and superhydrophobic paper, and biomedical uses including drug delivery and hard tissue regeneration.

We hope you will find this invitation appealing.

Best regards,

Dr. Dionysios Vroulias

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
