Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to submit your research to this Special Issue

"Next-Generation Protective Coatings: Innovative Smart Materials and Sustainable Strategies for Corrosion Mitigation".

Corrosion is an extremely significant economic problem - it is estimated that losses due to corrosion in highly developed countries alone reach 3–5% of gross domestic product. The impact of the environment on equipment and machinery, technical infrastructure, and buildings causes their continuous degradation and progressive deterioration. Consequently, this leads to the loss of their functional characteristics and performance properties.

Although significant progress has been made in the field of corrosion protection, and protective coatings are available for various materials and environments, the issue of effective corrosion protection remains a pressing one. This applies particularly to monitoring the condition of technical infrastructure, continuously assessing and analyzing the effectiveness of the applied protective coating, and responding to emerging threats.

The solution to these problems is self-repairing anti-corrosion coatings. In the event of micro-damage, they react and create a new protective layer, automatically repairing the defect. This means that, among other things, the durability of the protection can be significantly extended and its effectiveness can be improved.

Currently developed self-repairing systems are automatic and rely on various direct chemical or physical triggers. Smart coatings utilize nanoparticles, among other things. Various triggering, containment, and release mechanisms are known. These different mechanisms could be utilized in the future to develop new coatings for different metals, environments, and requirements.

This Special Issue will present the latest designs and developments in smart anti-corrosion coatings through original research papers and review articles from leading scientists and engineers from across the world.

In particular, the topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Current research in the area of ​​smart materials and coatings;
  • Concepts of the mechanism of action of smart coatings;
  • New potential materials for applications in smart anti-corrosion coatings;
  • Fabrication science of smart anti-corrosion protective coatings using various technologies;
  • Behavior of smart coatings in various corrosive environments;
  • The action of activators that enable the coating to respond to its environment;
  • Repair mechanisms, including how the repair agent is retained in the coating and released;
  • Future directions in research and development of smart anti-corrosion coatings.

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
