Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We would like to invite you to submit your research to this Special Issue, ‘Advances in Photothermal Self-Healing Anticorrosion Coatings: Materials, Mechanisms, Fabrication and Applications’. As one of the most promising strategies for extending the service life of metallic components, anticorrosion coatings have been widely applied in various industries, including marine, aerospace, automotive, and infrastructure. However, traditional passive coatings are prone to microcracks and damage during service, which leads to localized corrosion and premature failure. To address this issue, self-healing coatings that can autonomously repair damage have attracted considerable attention. Among them, photothermal self-healing coatings, which utilize photothermal materials to convert light into heat and trigger the healing process, offer unique advantages such as remote activation, high efficiency, and spatial selectivity. These coatings enable on-demand repair of cracks and restore barrier properties, significantly enhancing corrosion protection and extending the lifetime of coated structures.

Despite their potential, the practical application of photothermal self-healing anticorrosion coatings still faces challenges. These include the development of efficient photothermal materials with good compatibility, the design of reliable healing mechanisms, the optimization of coating fabrication processes, and the evaluation of long-term performance under realistic service conditions. Therefore, there is a pressing need for further research to advance the materials science, engineering, and application of these intelligent coatings.

This Special Issue aims to present the latest designs and developments in photothermal self-healing anticorrosion coatings through original research papers and review articles from leading scientists and engineers around the world. We welcome contributions that explore novel materials, healing mechanisms, fabrication techniques, and performance evaluation.

In particular, the topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Novel photothermal materials (e.g., nanomaterials, polymers) for self-healing coatings;
  • Self-healing mechanisms triggered by photothermal effects;
  • Fabrication and characterization of photothermal self-healing coatings;
  • Corrosion protection performance and long-term durability;
  • Synergistic effects of multiple healing strategies;
  • Applications in marine, aerospace, and other aggressive environments;
  • Computational modeling and simulation of healing processes.
