Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We invite you to submit your research findings to this Special Issue on "Advanced Functional Coatings and Composite Structural Design". High-performance protective coatings are widely used in fields such as aviation, aerospace, automotive, and shipping. Coatings designed as composite structures often have high comprehensive performance. For example, thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are typically designed as multi-layer composite structures, providing them with high thermal insulation performance and a long service life. However, in long-term harsh environments, the coating’s functionality experiences severe degradation. For example, ceramic sintering leads to a decrease in the thermal insulation performance of TBCs. Under high and low-temperature cycling conditions, the coating’s premature peeling may also occur due to factors such as ceramic sintering, oxide growth, phase transformation, and CMAS corrosion. To develop high-performance coatings, practical material selection is required through the development of preparation technology, composite structure design, and the disclosure of failure mechanisms.

This Special Issue aims to present the latest designs and developments in advanced functional coatings through original research papers and review articles from leading scientists and engineers around the world.

In particular, topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advanced materials for functional coatings;
  • Advanced coating preparation technology;
  • The failure mechanisms of coating services;
  • The design of multi-layer composite structures or single-layer composite materials;
  • Theoretical studies on high-performance protective coatings;
  • Finite element analysis;
  • Functional coatings other than thermal barrier coatings, environmental barrier coatings, wear-resistant coatings, sealing coatings, and lubricating coatings.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
