Dear Colleagues,
The development of advanced coatings is pivotal for enhancing the performance, durability, and functionality of metallic substrates in demanding environments. While traditional coatings primarily offer protection against corrosion and wear, the next generation demands a multifunctional approach. These advanced systems are engineered to provide additional properties such as anti-fouling, self-healing, thermal barrier, photocatalytic, antibacterial, or anti-icing capabilities, often while maintaining or even improving their primary protective role.
This Special Issue, "Advances in Multifunctional Coatings for Metals, Steels, and Alloys", aims to gather high-quality research and review articles that explore the latest scientific and technological breakthroughs in this dynamic field. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the design and synthesis of novel coating materials (e.g., nanocomposites, smart coatings, bio-inspired materials), advanced deposition and characterization techniques, and the investigation of performance mechanisms. We welcome contributions that address the challenges of integration, scalability, and long-term stability, pushing the boundaries of what protective coatings can achieve.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
