Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Extreme weather events driven by global climate change pose a significant threat to the resilience of the urban environment and to the well-being of urban populations. Rising temperatures, heavy rainfalls, prolonged droughts, and increasing energy consumption are among the key climate-related risks to public health and safety, which need to be considered nowadays. Moreover, as cities continue to expand and densify, local climate changes caused by the ambient urban heat island (UHI) effect can worsen these risks, increasing urban vulnerability and underscoring the urgency to implement new mitigation strategies. In this context, the built and urban environment plays a fundamental role in safeguarding both communities and cities against these escalating climate threats.

The adoption of nature-based solutions (NbSs), adaptive technologies, and reflective materials are a few examples of effective strategies to reduce urban vulnerability to climate risks, creating more liveable urban and built environments. This Special Issue aims to assess the impact of different technologies applied to the built and urban environments in current and future climate scenarios and in different climates. The effects of these technologies can be assessed at both the urban scale (ambient UHI analyses, outdoor thermal comfort, etc.) and/or the building scale (indoor thermal comfort, energy analyses, etc.), providing essential insights to define effective investment strategies for both architectural and urban environments.

This Special Issue welcomes both original research articles and review papers covering a broad range of research topics related to local climate change and mitigation strategies. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, green roofs, green walls, retroreflective materials, cool walls, cool roofs, cool pavements, evaporative strategies, urban NbS, UHI and/or building consumption assessment, and thermochromic materials.

Climate is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
