Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Early integration of paediatric palliative care (PPC) into standard oncologic care for children diagnosed with cancer has been shown to improve patient quality of life and symptom management, enhance communication around prognosis and goals of care, and lead early advanced care and end of life preparedness planning, alongside bereavement support. For the last two and a half decades, professional societies including the American Academy of Paediatrics, The World Health Organization, The American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Cancer Institute, all support PPC involvement from the time of diagnosis. However, current models for PPC integration vary widely and may reflect different national, institutional, cultural and personal barriers.
This Special Issue aims to highlight the growth of PPC delivery over the last decade to children diagnosed with cancer, encompassing holistic elements of care. Original research, high-quality reviews, and case reports will be considered for publication. Topics can include advanced-care planning, shared medical decision-making, symptom management, pain control, end-of-life care, bereavement support, and PPC education within paediatric hematology/oncology. Manuscripts focusing on vulnerable patient populations (i.e., adolescents and young adults, patients participating in early phase clinical trials) and diversity and equity in healthcare delivery are highly encouraged.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.
Kind Regards,
Dr. Andrea Cuviello
