Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) and extracellular particles (EPs) are key mediators of cell–cell communication, transferring bioactive lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids between cells. Therefore, they play important physiological and pathophysiological roles within and between the organisms. EV and EP formation, release, and uptake depend on membrane organization, trafficking pathways, and cytoskeletal dynamics.
This Special Issue, “Extracellular Vesicles, Extracellular Particles, and Membrane Biology”, focuses on the biophysical and biological mechanisms that govern EV and EP biogenesis and function from different perspectives. The integration of biophysical and biological views is highly warranted. Emphasis is placed on the interdependence of membrane composition, curvature, and membrane constituent sorting and on the regulation of EV heterogeneity, intracellular trafficking routes, and interactions of EVs and EPs with recipient cells.
We invite original research articles and reviews covering biophysical mechanisms connected to EVs and EPs and underlying processes such as formation of plasma membrane and internal compartment-derived vesicles, particles formed due to mechanical, chemical or thermal stresses during processing of samples, membrane remodeling during extracellular vesicle formation, EVs and EPs uptake and intracellular signaling, methodological advances in extracellular vesicles and particles analysis, and the roles of membranes in development, immunity, and disease.
By integrating biophysics, membrane biology, and cell biology, this Special Issue aims to advance mechanistic understanding of extracellular vesicles as functional components of cellular communication networks.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Cells is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
