Carbon-based Catalysts for Electrochemical Energy Conversion

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the last decade, we have been witnessing the unprecedented advances in electrochemical power sources. This development has established a vast market of electrochemical devices and materials with the industry demanding for sustainable and economically feasible technologies of production. A typical electrochemical cell uses carbon-based catalysts to speed-up electrode reactions. The scarce and limited resources for efficient PGM-based electrocatalysts stimulated incremental studies of PGM-free or low-PGM catalysts. Despite of multiple studies, the nature of catalytically active sites remains controversial, while this knowledge is of paramount importance for designing an efficient and low-cost catalyst for the large-scale production of low temperature fuel cells.

This Special Issue is thought to gather under a single cover the scientific contributions on synthesis of novel PGM-free and low-PGM carbon-based electrocatalysts. Their electrochemical activity is expected to be tested in various media and in different reactions. Special emphasis is likely to be given to the nature of active sites involved, to the analysis of reaction mechanism and kinetics. Characterization by all relevant methods including in-situ and operando is encouraged. Fundamental observations and applicability are valuable findings foreseen for original research papers, while short reviews may provide an in-depth inquiry or draw the upcoming trends.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Catalysts is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
