Aberrant DNA methylation is a fundamental feature of gynecologic carcinogenesis and an increasingly promising source of diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive biomarkers. Epigenetic alterations contribute to tumor initiation and progression, cellular plasticity, treatment response, and the emergence of therapy-resistant cellular populations. At the same time, rapid advances from conventional bulk-tissue profiling toward single-cell and spatially resolved epigenomics are revealing substantial intratumoral epigenetic heterogeneity and clonal evolution that cannot be fully captured by traditional molecular approaches.
This Special Issue, “DNA Methylation, Epigenetic Heterogeneity and Biomarkers in Gynecologic Cancers,” aims to present recent advances in cancer epigenetics and their translational and clinical relevance across ovarian, endometrial, cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and other gynecologic malignancies. Particular emphasis will be placed on DNA methylation and methylation-based biomarkers, while also addressing epigenetic heterogeneity, tumor evolution, treatment-associated epigenetic selection, and integration of epigenomic data with genomic, transcriptomic, and other molecular information.
We welcome original research articles, translational and clinical studies, methodological papers, systematic reviews, and comprehensive reviews addressing topics including, but not limited to, the following:
- DNA methylation and epigenetic dysregulation in gynecologic cancers;
- diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive epigenetic biomarkers;
- single-cell and spatial epigenomics;
- intratumoral epigenetic heterogeneity and cellular plasticity;
- clonal evolution and tumor progression;
- epigenetic mechanisms of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy resistance;
- treatment-associated epigenetic selection and tumor recurrence;
- circulating tumor DNA, methylation-based liquid biopsy, and early cancer detection;
- integrative epigenomics and multi-omics approaches;
- molecular classification, patient stratification, and precision oncology;
- novel technologies and computational approaches for methylation and epigenomic analysis.
We hope that this Special Issue will provide a multidisciplinary platform connecting fundamental cancer biology with translational research and clinically relevant biomarker development, ultimately contributing to more precise approaches to the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of gynecologic malignancies.
