Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, huge progress has been made in the diagnosis and management of brain tumors. The integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has emerged as a revolutionary approach in neurosurgery, offering new ways to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of brain tumor diagnosis and treatment.

Augmented reality (AR) enhances real-world environments by overlaying digital information, providing surgeons with a real-time, spatially accurate visualization of brain structures during surgery. Mixed reality (MR) takes this approach further by enabling more immersive interactions, where digital and physical elements coexist and seamlessly interact, offering a more intuitive and dynamic platform for surgical planning, real-time decision making, and patient-specific modeling in brain tumor treatments. The advent of high-resolution MRI, with its unprecedented resolution and sensitivity, has further revolutionized brain tumor imaging, providing extremely detailed anatomical and functional information.

This Special Issue aims to explore the synergies between AR and MRI technologies, highlighting their transformative potential in clinical practice. By combining high-resolution, real-time imaging with spatially accurate overlays, these technologies promise to significantly improve surgical planning, intraoperative guidance and postoperative monitoring.

The use of augmented reality in combination with high-resolution MRI enables the visualization of brain structures and tumors in three-dimensional space, providing surgeons with greater situational awareness and enabling more precise and minimally invasive interventions. Furthermore, this integration has the potential to reshape preoperative planning, reduce surgical risks and accelerate patient recovery.

In this Special Issue, we invite contributions examining the latest advances, clinical applications and future directions of augmented reality, mixed reality and high-resolution MRI in the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, new imaging techniques, high-resolution MRI, the development of augmented reality interfaces for surgical guidance, AI-based tools for tumor detection and the integration of augmented reality/MRI systems into routine clinical practice. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of this cutting-edge field, presenting research that paves the way for more effective, personalized and minimally invasive treatments for patients with brain tumors.
