Dear Colleagues,
Several neurological disorders demonstrate circadian participation in their mechanistic basis, management and treatment. However, the degree of circadian participation in many neurological disorders has yet to be clearly defined. The time of treatment within a circadian context, the lack of sensitivity to some chronobiotics, the most effective route of administration and the production of adverse effects varies greatly from one study to the next. This addresses an unmet need for an in-depth exploration of the parameters governing the use of chronotherapeutics as primary or adjuvant treatments in neurological applications. This series is a collection of works that may be useful in defining those parameters for treating and managing neurological disorders.
In this Special Issue, we invite original research articles, reviews and commentaries on the following research directions:
- The adverse effects of melatonin, light or other chronobiotics on neurological or neuropsychiatric disorders.
- The list of chronobiotics that are relevant include melatonin, light, exercise and antidepressants including Amitriptyline, Desipramine, Imipramine, Nortriptyline, Trimipramine, Sertraline and several others.
- Comparative efficacy of antioxidants versus melatonin. The comparison of efficacy is important in view of the many physiological functions served by melatonin that are affected by its use as an antioxidant. There are many more effective antioxidants on the market that do not have physiological roles that would be more appropriate.
- The use of melatonin antagonists in neurological disease.
- The area of Chronopharmacology, including work on diurnal circadian abundances of neurotransmitters in the control of metabolic systems.
- Those looking for alternative routes of drug administration for neuropsychiatric conditions.
