Background and history of this topic:
Cold stress is a major constraint on global crop productivity, causing yield losses of 30–60% in cereals and oilseeds. With climate change increasing the frequency and severity of extreme low-temperature events, developing cold-resilient crops has become an urgent priority for food security. Although significant progress has been made in deciphering molecular signaling, physiological responses, and agronomic practices, these advances remain largely fragmented across disciplines. An integrated framework that bridges molecular mechanisms, cellular adjustments, biochemical regulation, and field management is essential to translate fundamental knowledge into practical solutions for sustainable production under changing climates.
Aims and scopes of the Special Issue:
- Molecular mechanisms of cold perception, signal transduction, transcriptional and epigenetic regulation;
- Biochemical responses including antioxidant defense, osmolyte accumulation, hormone crosstalk, and energy metabolism;
- Cellular and subcellular structural and functional changes during cold acclimation and injury;
- Agronomic management strategies such as nitrogen optimization, sowing date adjustment, mulching, irrigation, and precision agriculture;
- Impacts of cold stress on crop yield and quality, and evaluation of mitigation practices;
- Integration of multi-omics, phenomics, and field-scale data for breeding, decision support, and climate resilience.
Cutting-edge research: Integrating molecular, biochemical, cellular, and agronomic approaches to unravel crop cold adaptation and translate fundamental insights into field-based yield protection under climate change.
What kind of papers we are soliciting: We invite original research, reviews, and short communications covering cold signaling, physiological responses, cellular acclimation, agronomic mitigation, yield assessment, and integrative multi-scale studies.
