Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms through which phytopathogenic and beneficial fungi perceive, transduce, and respond to environmental signals, enabling their survival, development, and virulence in agricultural ecosystems. It covers core signal transduction cascades, including the MAPK, cAMP-PKA, and TOR signaling pathways, as well as the regulatory functions of protein kinases and phosphatases in modulating fungal stress tolerance, cell wall integrity, osmotic homeostasis, and oxidative defense systems. Protein secretion machineries, such as signal peptidase complexes and the unfolded protein response (UPR), serve as central modules governing effector delivery and plant–fungal interaction dynamics. Epigenetic regulatory mechanisms, including histone modification and chromatin remodeling, dynamically reshape fungal gene expression programs in response to fluctuating external environmental cues.
For this Issue, we also welcome studies employing multi-omics strategies, population genomics, and functional genetic approaches to dissect key biological traits of fungi associated with major cereal and cash crops, including virulence evolution, host specificity, population genetic structure, and climate-driven adaptive variation. Furthermore, it encompasses translational research regarding fungicide resistance mechanisms, fungal-based biocontrol strategies, and crop protection applications derived from fungal environmental sensing pathways.
By bridging fundamental fungal sensory biology with translational agricultural applications, this Special Issue provides a comprehensive overview of how fungi adapt to and prosper in dynamically changing environments. It aims to promote interdisciplinary research efforts to advance sustainable crop disease management and safeguard global food security.
