MDPI Collaborates with Research Solutions' Scite to Bring Attributed, Open Access Research into AI Tools

MDPI is pleased to announce a new collaboration with Research Solutions (NASDAQ: RSSS), a leading provider of AI-powered scientific research tools. MDPI journals are now indexed in Scite and available through the Scite MCP (Model Context Protocol), a standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT retrieve content directly from trusted sources. Researchers using these tools can now access MDPI content with clear attribution and links to the Version of Record, the authoritative published version of each article. For the first time, MDPI will also have article-level insight into how its content is used in AI environments.
Researchers are increasingly starting their literature search in AI assistants rather than traditional search interfaces. Until now, research referenced in these tools has often lacked consistent attribution and links to the original article, and publishers have had little visibility into how it is used. This collaboration is a step toward closing that gap.
Because all MDPI content is published open access under a CC BY license, it can be freely shared and reused with attribution. This collaboration helps carry that attribution into the AI tools researchers now rely on.
"As researchers increasingly turn to AI assistants to navigate the literature, it is important that AI-generated answers are grounded in the scholarly record," said Dr. Constanze Schelhorn, Chief Publishing Officer at MDPI. "By making MDPI content available through Scite and the Scite MCP, we enable researchers to discover and engage with our open access publications in AI-driven environments, augmented by Scite's Smart Citations technology and direct links to the Version of Record, the authoritative published version of each article."
What this means for researchers and authors:
- MDPI's full portfolio is accessible through the Scite MCP in Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and other MCP-compatible AI tools.
- AI responses that draw on MDPI content through the Scite MCP link back to the Version of Record, with citation context from Scite's Smart Citations showing how findings have been evaluated by the broader literature.
- Responses are grounded in verified article text rather than reconstructed from an AI model's memory, which reduces the risk of misattributed or inaccurate findings.
- Authors' work is credited and traceable, wherever it is discovered.
What this means for MDPI:
- Article-level usage data will show MDPI which articles are accessed through AI, by which organizations, and on which platforms. This will help MDPI understand how research discovery is changing.
According to Research Solutions, the Scite MCP has served more than 22 million requests since its launch earlier this year, with volume growing more than 30% month over month.
"Open access has always been about making research more accessible. As discovery moves into AI tools, publishers need to know that researchers are finding the right source and authors are receiving proper attribution," said Sharon Mattern Büttiker, Vice President of Publisher Relations & Content Strategy, Research Solutions. "MDPI is taking an important step toward meeting researchers where they are while maintaining a direct connection to the authoritative version of its content and gaining greater visibility into how that content is discovered."
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment between MDPI and Research Solutions: as literature discovery moves into AI, the scholarly record should move with it, intact and properly credited.
