Cover Story: Hydrothermal carbonization at 250 °C was used to produce lignin from rice husks. Asphalt binder was modified with this lignin by adding 5% and 10% by mass. Adding lignin increased the rutting resistance of asphalt mixes. The stiffness of asphalt mixes also increased with the addition of lignin. When 5% lignin was added to the binder, improved moisture-induced damage resistance of asphalt mixes was found. The modification of a binder with lignin produced from hydrothermal carbonization thus has the potential to improve the asphalt binder and asphalt mixes’ properties and performances. View this paper
