Cover Story: Metal ions and complexes can bind to chitin, which results in a nearly tenfold increase in redox-based currents flowing through an electrode. Eu2+, a powerful reductant which forms upon the photo-oxidation of organics, reduces other metal ions like trivalent Fe and V when there are certain unsaturated ligands, such as fumarate and 4-cyanomandelate. Adding chitin to an electrochemical system containing an electrode consequently results in amplification (transistor function), whereas ring-forming chemical interactions among different electron shuttles on ligands stop current flow. This gives rise to an NAND gate, which can be reactivated through heating. As a result, simple electronic devices can thus be implemented. View this paper
