Cover Story: To cut soil containing tree roots in nurseries, the semicircular vibrating-blade digger is increasingly used, reducing cutting force by up to 70%. Vibration and cutting force are transmitted to the blade by the oscillator with eccentric masses and springs. To extend its use to large trees with root balls up to 1.8 m, a new oscillator with quadratic springs was developed, given that linear springs reached the end of the stroke during cutting. The study required the development of an approximate solution to the ODE of forced vibration with quadratic springs and dry blade–soil friction . The new oscillator was tested with all blades (from 0.6 to 1.8 m), providing optimal vibration and preventing the end of the stroke of springs. View this paper
