Cover Story: At present, powder-mixed electrical discharge machining (PMEDM) is being investigated by researchers and is emerging as a promising variant of electrical discharge machining technology. Before extending this process to industrial applications, certain aspects need to be studied, for instance, the concentration of graphite as powder in the dielectric and the evaluation of the benefits of surfactant use to avoid both the aggregation and sedimentation of the powder. It has been demonstrated that the surfactant can be replaced by an effective stirring system, making the process more sustainable. Adding graphite to the dielectric improves the Material Removal Rate compared to a pure dielectric by up to 150% with the highest concentration. The powder affects the spark length and therefore the geometrical characteristics of the hole. View this paper
