Cover Story: This paper explores the potential and challenges of using drones to deliver automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in mountainous regions, where topography and weather can delay traditional emergency services. Using field tests in Austria, the study evaluated operational benefits, such as faster AED delivery, and identified key challenges, including weather resistance and mobile connectivity issues. The findings highlight the feasibility of drone-assisted medical emergencies while emphasizing the need for further improvements for seamless integration into existing emergency systems.
